The
JMC-425TT MiniDob is a fully functional Dobsonian truss tube telescope kit
that was designed around 4.25” f/5 optics.
It will hold a primary mirror up to 5.4” in diameter with a focal
length of 21” or less (vignette will occur on mirrors over 4.25” in diameter). The
MiniDob was modeled after the large aperture truss tube telescopes that are
so popular today with amateur astronomers.
The design criteria for the MiniDob was that it had to look good and
work great. We went through dozens of
prototypes in an attempt to balance appearance and function. Folks tell us we achieved our goal. All
of the MiniDob plywood components are cut from birch plywood using a CO2
laser in our own shop. The laser leaves
a very clean, almost polished, edge with an attractive brown patina and the
parts fit is excellent. If you enjoy
kit building, you’ll find assembling the MiniDob a pleasure. The
MiniDob kit includes all the components required to take your optics and turn
them into a fully functional Dobsonian truss tube telescope.* With the exception of the truss rods, all
parts are precut with only minor fitting required. The kit can be assembled with gap filling cyanoacrylate (super
glue), epoxy, or wood glue (aliphatic resin). The basic kit includes: Crayford style 1.25” focuser, spider,
fully adjustable diagonal mirror holder, polypropylene baffle, Teflon and
Ebony Star Formica bearing surfaces, adjustable primary mirror cell, mirror
cover, all stainless steel hardware, and even a peep sight style finder. Not into kit building? Send us your optics and we’ll build a
